Blood Clots and Plane Flights

Friday December 19, 2003
Blood clots are a concern for many people, especially those with certain risk factors. Having major extremity surgery, such as a hip or knee replacement, are procedures that make a patient more prone to developing a blood clot.

Long plane flights are known to increase the risk of developing a blood clot. Now research is showing that even without having other risk factors, a long plane flight can expose people to as much as a 1 in 100 risk of developing a blood clot. That's 3 passangers on a large plane with 300 people!
