What does a 'knee sprain' mean?

Friday October 7, 2005
As a patient you may be told you have a knee sprain, or you may read about an athlete who is sidelinded by a knee sprain. But what does the diagnosis of a knee sprain mean? Well, not too much. The name knee sprain means one of the ligaments in the knee has been injured. However, the diagnosis of a knee sprain does not tell you which ligament has been damaged or how significant an injury occurred. In order to know more about the knee sprain injury, and what the prognosis of the patient may be, you need more information about what ligaments were actually injured.
