What is an ankle sprain?

Sunday May 14, 2006
When an ankle sprain occurs, ligaments within the ankle are torn. The severity of the ankle sprain depends on the extent of the tear. In milder cases, the ligaments are torn, but not completely. In more severe sprains, the tearing can be complete, and may involve multiple ligaments.

(2) orthopedics says:

The difference between a sprain and a strain is described here: Sprains and Strains In short, ‘ankle strain’ is not an accepted diagnosis. A strain refers to a muscle injury, whereas a sprain refers toa ligament injury. Strains of the muscles around the ankle would be properly described according to the muscle injured (such as a calf strain, etc.).
