New Osteoporosis Medication Taken Once Yearly

Wednesday August 29, 2007
Osteoporosis is a common condition, seen most often in postmenopausal women. Osteoporosis causes a thinning of the normal bone, and can increase susceptibility to all types of fractures, but most concerning are hip fractures. Hip fractures can be a devestating injury and lead to many problems in the elderly population.

Osteoporosis medications have been shown to be extremely effective for many patients at reducing their risk of fractures. Like many other medications osteoporosis medications are often forgotten, and many patients find these helpful medications difficult to take. A new osteoporosis medication, called Reclast ®, is taken once each year. Reclast ® is given intravenously, it takes about 15 minutes to receive the infusion.
