Magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, is a very useful tool for an orthopedic surgeon. A MRI is helpful at diagnosing many common orthopedic problems. However, a MRI may not always be necessary, and may not be helpful in some situations. Patients are sometimes upset if their doctor does not order a MRI, and may feel as though they are getting inadequate medical care.

OK This a long story. 1st I broke my proximal Humerus 4 years ago (2004) just under the ball so I know what I’m talking about. If you have any metal in your body you can’t have a MRI. They perform a CT Scan. I had 2 non unions after 2 surgeries and the 3rd surgery took with what is called a Blade Plate. Thank You Jessie Jupiter !!!
But if you think your shoulder is broken demand that you get one or the other scan. DO NOT let Doctors push you around. My 1st 2 surgeons screwed me. The 1st one sent me to PT with a non union and the 2nd just failed. Its your body Demand a test. Its your Body You know what feels right and wrong.
Also get a CT scan before going to PT. Don’t ask tell your Doctor you want one.
4 years 3 surgeries and 3 pieces of metal in and out of me really sucked. Take responsibility for your own health. Question your Doctors. I haven’t even told you the worst parts of my story.
Hope that helps
