Can Shoes Prevent Hip Fractures?

Scientists working with the space program to develop shoes for astronauts have stumbled across technology that could help prevent injuries among more than just space walkers. These shoes are designed to sense balance problems before people fall. They were designed for astronauts returning from space, but may be used to help elderly patients who are unsteady on their feet.

Falls are one of the most common causes of injury in elderly patients. Problems including hip fractures can be devastating and potentially life-threatening injuries. Steps to prevent these injuries are important to reduce health problems in seniors.
