Cost of Knee Surgery

By , About.com GuideSeptember 24, 2012

Follow me on:

Medical costs are difficult to understand, even for doctors and medical professionals.  Costs for the same service can vary dramatically based on individuals, location, etc.  Not every surgery will cost the same, and the variation from one location to another can be astounding.

A recent study investigated the cost of two common knee surgeries.  These surgical procedures were a knee arthroscopy and an ACL reconstruction.  The cost included both the hospital fee (which covers expenses such as the operating room, supplies, and anesthesia services) and the surgeon fees.

ACL Surgery: $10,326

Knee Arthroscopy: $5,783

This is obviously the cost in the United States, those reading in other countries may find local costs are also dramatically different.  Also, this is in 2009 dollars. What do you think?  Is this too much?  Leave your comments below... Interestingly, the study found both of these surgical procedures were cost-effective--measured by improvements in quality of life.
