ACL Tears Most Common In Women

By July 28, 2013

Follow me on:

A recent review has published the most up-to-date data on ACL tears in female athletes. Some of the findings included:

  • ACL tears are 3X more common in women than in men
  • Neuromuscular training can reduce the risk of ACL tears in female athletes
  • Knee anatomy may contribute to risk of ACL tear, and needs to be accounted for during surgical reconstruction
  • There is no evidence linking ACL tear to menstrual cycle
  • There is no evidence that experience in sports (or lack of) causes increased ACL tears in female athletes
