Achilles Tendon Rupture

Definition: Achilles tendon rupture is a condition where the tendon of the heel cord behind the ankle is torn. Achilles tendon rupture may occur without any preceeding Achilles tendon problems, or it may be a result of chronic Achilles tendonitis. Chronic Achilles tendonitis can lead to small tears within the tendon. These tears cause the tendon to become increasingly weak and therefore more susceptible to rupture.

Achilles tendon rupture is generally treated surgically to reattach the tendon to its normal position. For more information:
