Scheuermann's kyphosis is most commonly diagnosed in adolescents at the time of puberty. It is thought to run in families, but this relationship has not been well demonstrated. Factors such as height and weight are also thought to be possible contributing factors.
Treatment usually begins conservatively, and often Scheuermann's kyphosis resolves at the end of the adolescent's rapid growth. Treatment with a brace is sometimes used. Surgery is rarely needed to treat Scheuermann's kyphosis.
