Definition: Congenital scoliosis is due to a developmental deformity in the formation of the vertebrae. Congenital scoliosis is often associated with other congenital malformations, including genitourinary (25%), cardiac (10%), and others. Any child diagnosed with congenital scoliosis will also be evaluated for other commonly associated deformities.

Treatment of congenital scoliosis depends on the specific deformity, and ranges from immediate surgery to observation. Surgery is often required for progressively worsening curves. Discuss with your doctor the treatment options for the specific type of congenital scoliosis in your child.
