Definition: Kyphosis is a condition of abnormal angulation of the spine. In kyphosis there is an excessive curvature that often leads to a round back deformity.

The are congenital conditions (such as Scheuermann's kyphosis), as well as acquired conditions (such as compression fractures), which can lead to this condition. A kyphosis is often seen in elderly individuals who sustain repeated compression fractures due to osteoporosis. These fractures of the spine cause the vertebral bodies to become wedged, and the back becomes rounded.
