Definition: Thrower's elbow is a condition of elbow pain specifically seen in throwing athletes such as baseball pitchers. Because of the extremely high forces exerted on the elbow joint with this motion, repetitive injury can cause the formation of a bone spur in the back of the elbow. These forces are termed "valgus extension overload."
Throwers who experience these symptoms should be evaluated by their physician. Many will respond to simple treatments including rest, therapy, and anti-inflammatory medications. In some individuals, the bone spur may require arthroscopic removal to relieve the symptoms.
