Joint replacement surgery is done to remove the damaged, worn out surfaces of a joint, and replace these with an artificial implant. Several procedures are available as alternatives to hip replacement and knee replacement surgery.
Alternatives to Hip Replacement Surgery
Are there alternatives to hip replacement surgery? Hip replacement surgery is the standard treatment for severe arthritis of the hip joint. However, there are some alternatives to hip replacement, but for most patients, hip replacement surgery is the optimal treatment.
Hip Resurfacing
Hip resurfacing surgery is an alternative to standard hip replacements for patients with severe arthritis. In a hip resurfacing surgery, the implant is smaller, and less normal bone is removed. Hip resurfacing is gaining interest, especially in younger patients.
Knee Osteotomy - Replacement Alternative
Knee arthritis is a common problem that causes knee pain, limited motion, and swelling. Surgical treatment often is focused on knee replacement, but alternatives such as tibial osteotomy do exist. While tibial osteotomy is not right for all patients, it does have a role in the treatment of arthritis of the knee.
Partial Knee Replacement Surgery
Also called a unicompartmental knee replacement, this is a resurfacing of one compartment of the knee. It is a surgical option for the treatment of limited osteoarthritis of the knee.
