How I Tore My ACL

I was skiing in Wyoming, we were making wide sweeping turns and I caught an edge the next thing you know I was going downhill backwards when I caught another edge and it threw me back as I fell back my left ski twisted hard and fast to the outside twisting my knee in the process.

What Happened?

After sliding on my back for a ways I used my skis to get turned and get stopped as the hill was very steep the second the ski twisted my leg I could feel that I was in trouble but I had to use my bad leg as well as my good one to stop my decent I did not know the extent of the injury because in 35 years skiing I never wiped out quite like this. After I stopped falling I rested and let the pain dissipate and I really thought I could make it down the mountain so I stood on my skis and prepared to proceed. I made it about 10 more feet and I had no control of my knee side to side that's when I realized I had a significant injury.

Lessons Learned

  • When we went to the summit it was about 11:30 and I could have sat at a bar and grill and had lunch and rested for an hour. I was a little tired and I got lazy going down that hill and I truly think if I was 100% on that run I would be skiing right now instead of getting ready for ACL surgery.*
