Difficulty With Pain Medicine

Submit an Entry: I Wish I Knew Before Knee Replacement...

What Made You Decide to Have Knee Replacement?

I couldn't stand for any period of time without pain....I was bone on bone

What Were You Not Prepared For?

Reaction to the morphine and pain meds after surgery. Had hallucinations in the hospital. I was switched to Tramadol for pain relief when I was discharged, because it doesn't have the risk of bad side effects like Oxycodone or Percocet.

I took Tramadol for 4 weeks, then started to wean myself off as the pain subsided. I had some nasty side effects from stopping the Tramadol, such as bad headaches, extreme exhaustion, and some breathing problems. Pharmacist told me that this was normal!

Lessons Learned

  • Be prepared for drug side effects, and don't be afraid to tell the nursing staff about your symptoms. Read about possible side effects online.
  • After you are home, call the doctor's office if you have any side effects from your pain meds. Everyone reacts differently, and you can easily change meds.
