Rehab Harder Than Expected

Submit an Entry: I Wish I Knew Before Knee Replacement...

What Made You Decide to Have Knee Replacement?

Like most everyone else, I had bone on bone and lots of pain.

What Were You Not Prepared For?

How extremely depressed and anxious I would be after surgery. Not being able to do what I used to do has been devastating. My surgeon said I would be laid up about "3-6 weeks". I am currently at 12 weeks and am still struggling. If you are prone to depression or anxiety--GET ON A MEDICATION BEFORE the procedure. I had weeks of feeling on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Be prepared for this to take a LOT longer than you think it will. Also, my Dr. and P.T. have both said this is a much harder operation for younger people, (I'm 57) than it is for older folks. Sometimes the docs and the P.T.s aren't always on the same page and that can make the rehab frustrating too.

Lessons Learned

  • My right knee is now bothering me and I will do EVERYTHING in my power to keep from having another knee replacement. Everyone tells me that in time I will be glad I had it done. But right now it's one of the worst things I have ever been through.
